Spanish low-cost carrier Volotea will further expand its presence in Italy after confirming plans to open a base in Genoa.  The new hub, which is due to come online next year, is the airline’s fourth in Italy after Venice, Verona and Palermo, and its ninth in Europe.

Volotea founder and CEO Carlos Muñoz remarked: “Liguria is one of the most important regions in our development strategy and, for this reason, we have decided to strengthen our presence in the area, making Genoa our new home in Italy”.

Marco Arato, President of Airport Genoa added: “We are proud that Volotea has chosen our airport as its fourth base in Italy and we are grateful to the airline for the confidence in our airport and in Liguria.  Having a base means having a higher number of flights, more destinations and more convenient schedules.  All this without forgetting the implications for employment, with dozens of new jobs that will cover professional high‐profile members such as pilots, crews and technicians.”

The carrier currently operates seven routes from Genoa – including Alghero, Brindisi and Cagliari added earlier this year – and will increase its network to 15 destinations within three years.
